Sunburn Relief - Tips to Treat It

sunburn relief

If you happened to have forgotten your sunscreen over the past weekend and got burned, you’re probably looking for a quick sunburn relief remedy about now.

About.com’s Rod Brouhard has some excellent tips of how to treat your burn.

As always, if your burn is severe, you need to seek professional help immediately. Blistering is a sure sign that you have a severe sunburn.

Here are a few key points from Brouhard to help you with sunburn relief:

  • Stay out of the sun to prevent further burn and take a cool bath to help with the pain.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help provide sunburn pain relief.
  • Keep butters and oils away! Brouhard strongly recommends against them! Instead, apply aloe to your burn.
  • If you experience swelling of the hands or feet (turning blue, tingly, etc.), seek immediate, professional medial help.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing to prevent irritation while the burn is healing.

Yogurt and Honey for Sunburn Relief

yogurt and honey for sunburn reliefWith the official start of summer just around the corner, you may have already gotten sun burnt one or twice already and like myself, you need quick sunburn relief!

Frugalpig.com has an interesting article I recently came across stating that you can use a combination of yogurt and honey to sooth your sunburn. The original article can be found here.

Here is the quick sunburn relief remedy they recommend that you concoct:

“You need 1 tablespoon of Yogurt at room temp. It should be regular yogurt, and not the low fat variety. You also need 1 teaspoon of soft honey. You can warm it up for a few seconds in the microwave so it is soft. You also need some hot or warm water and a washcloth. That’s it!

Mix the honey and yogurt together. Apply the mixture to your burn. Then soak the washcloth in the hot water and use it to wash your face. Use common sense about the temperature of the water. A sunburn may not enjoy very hot water, but you may want a steaming washcloth if you use this for an every day facial.”

Quick Home Remedy for Fast Sunburn Relief

After getting burned recently after a weekend out in the sun, I decided to try and find a quick solution that would provide sunburn relief.

sunburn reliefSurprisingly, I found that you don’t even need to go to the store and purchase expensive burn relief creams or ointments. Instead, you may already have what you need right at home.

Erin Huffstetler on About.com suggests that you can cool the burn of your sunburn by misting yourself with vinegar (white or apple cider) on your burn and applying the vinegar by cotton ball to your face.

She states that the reason it works is as follows:

The acetic acid in vinegar soothes and moisturizes sunburned skin – just what you need to feel better now, and minimize unsightly peeling later.
